When a Friend Says:
“I think I am getting divorced…”

It’s tough to hear—especially from someone you care about. You want to help, but without:

  • Getting “in the middle”
  • Speaking ill of their spouse
  • Offending their spouse

Here’s one idea that has helped others in your friend’s situation: suggest they look into a Reconciliation Agreement.

A Reconciliation Agreement is a written agreement created when a couple wants to try to reconcile but also recognizes the possibility of divorce. It:

  • Sets out the rights and obligations of both parties if divorce becomes a reality
  • Gives the marriage its best shot at working
  • Provides a clear, non-litigation divorce framework if things don’t work out

In Massachusetts, Reconciliation Agreements have specific requirements and must be written under certain legal circumstances. They should never be attempted without the guidance of a divorce attorney or experienced divorce mediator.

By suggesting this option, you give your friend hope for saving the marriage—and a plan if that’s not possible.

Be well,
